Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses in Pakistan and India
"Dentist near me." "AC repair Gulshan." "Best nihari in Lahore." "Chartered accountant Andheri."
Every day, people near your business type searches like these. Local SEO is simply the work of making sure your business shows up when they do, with the right details, good reviews and a reason to call you instead of the next name on the list.
The good news is that most of it is free, and most of your competitors are doing it badly. The bad news is that it's a lot of small things, and it's easy to forget one.
So I made a checklist. It pulls together the guides I've written on my blog about Google Business Profile, reviews and AI search, in one place. Go through it from top to bottom. The first two sections matter the most, so if you only have one afternoon, start there.
First, how local ranking actually works
Google's tips to improve local ranking say local results are mainly based on three things:
- Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what someone searched for.
- Distance: how far your business is from the person searching.
- Prominence: how well-known your business is. Google says this is also based on things like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.
You can't change your distance. But you can work on relevance (complete, accurate details) and prominence (reviews, mentions and links). That's what this checklist is about.
One more thing from the same page: Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. So if someone on WhatsApp promises you "guaranteed number one on Google Maps," you know what to do.
Part 1: Google Business Profile
This is the foundation. If you don't have one yet, follow my step-by-step Google Business Profile setup guide first, then come back and tick these off.
- ☐ You're eligible. Google's guidelines say you need a physical location customers can visit, or you need to travel to customers. A virtual office you don't work from doesn't count.
- ☐ The profile is verified. Google's local ranking tips list verification first, and you can't reply to reviews until it's done.
- ☐ Your name is your real-world name only. No keywords, areas, phone numbers or taglines. Google says unnecessary information in the name can get your profile suspended.
- ☐ Your name appears in one script, not two. This one matters in South Asia. Google's guidelines list "repeated bilingual names / script transliterations" as not allowed, even if your signboard shows the name in both English and Urdu or Hindi. Pick one.
- ☐ One specific primary category, and as few extra categories as possible. Google's test: choose categories that complete the sentence "This business IS a," not "This business HAS a."
- ☐ The map pin is on your actual building. Google's guidelines say that if your address has no street number, you can pin your location directly on the map, and that cross-streets or landmarks belong only in places where the official address doesn't pinpoint the location.
- ☐ Service-area businesses hide their address. If you go to customers, like a plumber, tutor or AC technician, list your service areas instead. My GBP guide covers the limits.
- ☐ A local phone number you actually answer. Google says the number must be under your direct control, and a local number is better than a central call center helpline.
- ☐ Real hours, plus special hours for Eid, Ramadan timings and public holidays.
- ☐ A description of up to 750 characters, with no links and no prices or sale offers, according to Google's edit profile page.
- ☐ Services added, with plain names like "AC gas refill," not "AC gas refill Rs 3500 call now."
- ☐ Real photos, starting with your logo, cover and an exterior shot so people can recognize your shop from the road.
- ☐ Social links and a chat button, if you see the option. Google says both are only available in select regions. Social links can include Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and others.
- ☐ At least two owners, and notifications on. Google lets a profile have multiple owners and managers. Don't keep it all on one person's personal Gmail.
Part 2: NAP consistency and citations
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. A citation is any place online that lists them, like Facebook, a directory or a delivery app.
Google's guidelines ask you to represent your business the way it's consistently represented and recognized in the real world, across signage, stationery and other branding. Google also says it can detect category information from your website and from mentions of your business across the web. So when your details say one thing on Google, another on Facebook and a third on an old directory, you're sending mixed signals to people and to search engines.
Here's the fix.
- ☐ Write one master version of your details in a note on your phone: business name exactly as on your signboard, full address in one format, phone number in one format (with +92 or +91), website, and hours. Copy from this every single time.
- ☐ Make your website match it. Put the same name, address and phone number on your contact page and in your footer.
- ☐ Update your social profiles. Facebook page, Instagram bio and your WhatsApp Business profile. WhatsApp's quick replies page says the app creates default replies from your business profile, so a customer can get your address and hours in one tap. That only helps if the profile is right.
- ☐ Update the apps you sell on, like food delivery apps, marketplaces and booking apps.
- ☐ Get listed where your industry actually lives. Trade associations, your local chamber of commerce, well-known national directories (like Justdial in India) and the platforms your customers use to compare businesses like yours.
- ☐ Clean up the old stuff. Search your business name and your old phone numbers. Fix or close outdated listings, especially after you've moved or changed numbers.
- ☐ Remove duplicates. Google's guidelines say there should be only one profile per business. If an old duplicate exists, request ownership of it instead of creating another one.
- ☐ Share a Plus Code where addresses are messy. Many addresses in Pakistan and India don't have neat street numbers. Google's Plus Codes help page says a Plus Code gives you a simple digital address you can copy from Google Maps and paste into any messaging app. Put it on your website's contact page and in your WhatsApp quick replies.
What to skip: "500 directory submissions for Rs 2,000" packages. A handful of accurate listings on sites real people use beats hundreds of junk pages with your name spelled five different ways.
Part 3: Reviews
Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and its tips for getting more reviews say you can ask customers to use a review link or scan a QR code.
- ☐ Get your review link and QR code from Read reviews > Get more reviews in your Business Profile. My guide on how to get more Google reviews has the full steps.
- ☐ Ask every customer, the same way. Google's content policy doesn't allow incentives, selectively asking only happy customers, or discouraging negative reviews.
- ☐ Save a WhatsApp template for review requests. Here are ready-made WhatsApp messages in English and Roman Urdu.
- ☐ Reply to every review. Here are 12 ways to respond to negative Google reviews for the hard ones.
- ☐ Report fake reviews instead of arguing. Here's how to report a fake Google review.
- ☐ Put it on a schedule. My weekly 30-minute online reputation routine shows you exactly what to check and when.
Part 4: Your website and location pages
You don't need a fancy website for local SEO. You need a clear one.
- ☐ Your website link is on your Business Profile, and the details on the site match the profile.
- ☐ One page per branch, if you have more than one. Each page should be genuinely different: the branch address and pin, hours, phone, photos of that branch, which services it offers, parking, and directions from a landmark people know ("opposite the main petrol pump, next to the bank").
- ☐ One page per main service, saying who it's for and which areas you serve.
- ☐ No copy-paste city pages. It's tempting to make 40 pages like "AC repair in Clifton," "AC repair in DHA," "AC repair in Gulshan" with only the area name changed. Google's spam policies describe doorway abuse, and one of the examples is having multiple pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page. Only create an area page if you have something real to say about that area.
- ☐ Answer the questions customers ask on WhatsApp. Prices or starting prices, timings, delivery areas, languages spoken, whether you have a female doctor or a prayer area. These details help people decide, and they help AI tools too. I explain that side in how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, and what Google's own AI Overviews change (and don't) in Google AI Overviews for small businesses.
- ☐ Add LocalBusiness structured data, if you or your developer can. Google's local business structured data guide lists name and address as required, and recommends properties like geo coordinates (at least 5 decimal places), opening hours, telephone and URL. Test it with the Rich Results Test.
- ☐ Don't mark up your own star rating. The same guide says the aggregate rating property is only recommended for sites that capture reviews about other local businesses.
- ☐ Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Google's structured data guide also recommends submitting a sitemap to keep Google informed of changes.
Part 5: Bing Places and Apple Maps
Most small businesses in Pakistan and India stop at Google. That's exactly why these two are worth an hour.
Bing Places for Business
Microsoft's Bing Places announcement describes it as a free platform where businesses create and manage listings that appear in Bing search results and Bing Maps. It now lives at bing.com/forbusiness, and Microsoft says it has improved importing listings from Google.
- ☐ Search Bing Maps for your business first, so you claim an existing listing instead of creating a duplicate.
- ☐ Import from your Google Business Profile once your Google details are correct. Fix Google first, then import.
- ☐ Check the imported listing for your category, hours and phone format.
Bing is worth the effort for AI search too. I explain why in my ChatGPT recommendations guide.
Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect)
If you've read older guides, they'll tell you to use Apple Business Connect. Apple's announcement says that from April 14, 2026, Business Connect became part of a new free service called Apple Business, and existing Business Connect data moved over automatically.
Is it available here? Apple's feature availability page lists Brand and Location Management for both Pakistan and India. That's the part you need for Apple Maps.
- ☐ Sign up at Apple Business and verify your organization. Apple's add a location guide says that for your first location, you need to verify your organization and send it to Apple for review.
- ☐ Add or claim your location under Brands > Locations. If your business already exists on Apple Maps, Apple says phone verification may be available.
- ☐ If someone else already manages it, request a transfer. Apple says you can add supporting documents like a business license or utility bill.
- ☐ Fill in your place card. Apple's place card guide says the place card shows up across Apple's software, from Maps to Siri and more. Add your logo, cover photo, category, hours and website. Apple's guide says the name should match your storefront or website, the hours should match your website whenever possible, and the phone number needs the country code. Your master NAP note from Part 2 makes this easy.
- ☐ Watch for Apple's emails. Apple's location accuracy page says customers can report issues from your place card, and Apple emails you when it edits your location name, status or hours.
Part 6: Track what's working
- ☐ Check your Performance report monthly. Google's performance help page says it shows the search terms people used to find your profile, plus views, direction requests, calls and website clicks. The searches data updates at the start of each month.
- ☐ Search like a customer. Search your main service from your phone, near your shop and from a few streets away. Because distance is a ranking factor, results change depending on where the search happens. Don't panic over one screenshot.
- ☐ Re-check your profile after edits. Google's address help page says profile changes usually take about 10 minutes to show up, but sometimes up to 30 days.
- ☐ Ignore "Google" calls asking for money. Google says it will never ask for payment to keep your business on Google.

FAQ
What should a local SEO checklist include?
A complete, verified Google Business Profile, the same name, address and phone number everywhere, a steady flow of genuine reviews with replies, clear pages on your website for each branch and service, and listings on Bing Places and Apple Maps. Then check your results every month.
Is Apple Business available in Pakistan and India?
Yes. Apple's feature availability page lists Brand and Location Management, the part used for Apple Maps place cards, for both Pakistan and India. Apple Business replaced Apple Business Connect on April 14, 2026.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Google Maps?
No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, so focus on complete details, reviews and real mentions of your business.
Should I create a page for every area I serve?
Only if each page has something genuinely useful and different, like a real branch, local photos or area-specific details. Google's spam policies describe pages targeted at specific cities or regions that funnel users to one page as doorway abuse.
Do I need a website for local SEO?
Your Business Profile does a lot of the work, but a simple website helps. Google says it can detect category information from your website and mentions across the web, and prominence is partly based on how many websites link to your business.
